Power Supply Basics: Giving Your Projects the Right Juice 10 Aug 2025 • 1 min read

How to choose and use the correct power source for your builds.

Powering an electronics project isn’t as simple as plugging it in — the wrong choice can lead to unreliable behaviour or even damage.

Start by determining your voltage and current requirements. Too little voltage and the circuit won’t run; too much, and components can burn out. Current should be sufficient to handle peak demand without overheating.

Options range from simple AA battery packs to regulated wall adapters and USB power banks. For high-stability projects, a bench power supply lets you fine-tune output and troubleshoot safely.

Always double-check polarity and connectors before powering up — nothing ruins a weekend like releasing the magic smoke from a brand-new board.
