Leatherworking might seem intimidating, but a simple belt is a perfect beginner’s project. Start with a quality vegetable-tanned strap — about 3.5 to 4mm thick — cut to your waist measurement plus a few extra inches.
Bevel the edges with an edge tool for comfort, then burnish them smooth with a wooden slicker and some beeswax. Punch holes for the buckle and stitching, and use strong waxed thread for durability. Finish by applying a leather conditioner or oil to bring out the richness of the grain.
The result? A belt that fits perfectly, will last for years, and carries the satisfaction of being made by your own hands.
